Bento originated in Japan during the Kamakura period (1185-1333).Indeed, the Japanese were preparing food boxes to eat during Hanami (cherry blossoms viewing): Bento. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the tradition of Bento intensified until today where it still is popular.
Especially popular and used in Japan for many years, Bento were exported beyond Japanese borders.In recent years, Bento boxes are very popular and sought after by Westener.
Recently the most famous Bento are the “Kyaraben”: Bento in which the food is customized to look like a manga character or kawaii animals.
In general, a Bento consists of rice and a balanced mix of meat or fish with vegetables. This mixture makes room for a large variety of Bento.
